what is the likely hood that a new steel shim head gasket will work without machining the head or the block?

Check the deck, and the head with a straight edge. My cuda has a shim gasket without cutting the deck, but does have a milled head.
My 66 Valiant was originally built with the shim gasket and no cut on the head or block. Ran a couple of seasons, before we cut the head, for a compression increase. Still using the shim gasket.

Could work... IF you have a "long board" sanding block and a lot of "elbow grease".

You will have to pull the dowel pins out of the block deck and start sanding... and checking, with a straight edge, before you know for sure... If the head or block is un-even or warped, it is best to spend the $$ to get them resurfaced.

It is always interesting to see the "high - low" areas when you start sanding... the block in my photos below had "zebra stripes". :shock: :?

what grit sand paper?
also my block isnt disassembled is there a way to keep the metal shavings out of the passages?

80 grit belt from a vertical belt sander belt. Use a little WD 40.
