I have search unsuccessfully for a full engine break in. What is the correct procedure?

Service manual indicates 5 Quarters with filter change but with and completely empty engine how much oil? When in break in period is it regular oil and a break in additive or 5 quarts of break in oil? I believe I read somewhere initial startup the engine should be run at 2000 RPM for 15 or 20 minutes. I just really want to make sure I get this right. I have about 1500-1800 in this engine and blowing it just ain't cool.

I ask because I have changed just about everything.

Reground OCG Cam (791) 230 lift
New lifters
Crank ground and polished -10
New Main and Rod bearings
Silovlite Pistons +.040
Rods rebuilt
engbldr Valves and springs
New lifter rods

With an engine not run in yet, you will need 6 quarts (5 for the standard oil capacity and oil filter...1 more for all the areas that normally have a film of oil for lubrication...if you are adding 1/2 quart of Comp Cam secret sauce, EOS, etc than only need 1/2 more quart). Put a few glugs into the oil filter before installing to help prime the engine.

Make sure everything is good (connections fuel, etc...), you can do an initial wind up with the plugs out and starter rolling the motor over until you get oil out the rocker arms...put it all back together and start the car, and set the fast idle screw on your carb to 2000 rpm, go for 10-15 minutes at 2000 rpm, for the last 5 minutes use your hand to vary the engine speed 2000-3000 every so often. Change oil check for 'bits', if good drive it for another few hundred miles and change oil again.

Good Luck,

So I have another question. My engine is a flat tappet and the timing is done by adjusters obviously. My question is do I need to set the adjusters before I start the engine the first time? This would be done by manually rotating the engine until the intake and exhaust are slightly open correct?

The other question is about timing. It is supposed to be set at idle but I am seeing I am supposed to run the engine at a higher RPM the idle. Do I just leave the timing as is for break in or can I set it while the engine is breaking in? If not how do I set the timing with the engine not running?

You got it, set your valve lash a little loose from the cam spec (I bat around .002-.004 depending on the cam profile), rolling engine over and adjusting as they enter the lash range.

Unless I know what the build wants timing wise, I set it between TDC-5 BTDC for starters, then you can adjust that during break in (as long as you don't kill the engine on adjustment.

Once your 20 minutes are up, you can put it a low idle and recheck the lash and see if any improvements are made there (i.e. if too tight or just right).

Much obliged I just spent to much money to blow it and I want to make sure I understand it to prevent damage.
