Well when we got my buddies scamp the car had no radiator, so I knew it had some cooling problems. Before installing a replacement radiator I dumped 4 quarts of vinigar down the thermostate housing topped off with water. 4days later I start flushing and get oarange frothy mess then it turns to a dark black sludge but nott oilly. I adventually got pretty clear water flowing. I went to remove the hoses and the outlet on the waterpump for the lower radiator hose just crumbled to pieces.

After it ran a couple hours after sitting for many years I found oil starting to seep from around the pan and front cover. I was wanting to change the pan gasket anyway and the motor mounts are just plain wasted. So I think now is the perfect time to pull the motor clean it inside and out, a fresh coat of paint and even check the timing chain.

Any idea what caused the water pump to just corroid away. My guess they ran just straight water but that would have to be for ever. Should I expect any other problems with the block or head.

Agreed, no antifreeze and electrolysis had it's way with the aluminum....

The water pumps are made from aluminum and so is the thermostat housing elbow.

Napa sells a cast iron elbow. It requires a bit of grinding to fit nicely but it is pretty damn chunky anyway.

I bought one of those and used stainless steal allen head bolts to attach it instead of grinding it down. No more seepage from the thermostat gasket! The cast iron is stays straight and true and seals with just the FelPro gasket and without silicone gasket sealer.

I got my cast iron one from CarQuest Auto Parts. I can look for a part# if you like.
