slantsteve, it is centered well, when i test fit the adapter on the engine i measured the center hole of the plate to the crank and it is perfectly centered. i then test fit adapter on the trans and measured to the input shaft of trans and again was centered. should be good.

the rear of the engine (measured off the rear oil pan rail) is about 1/8 inch lower than measured before removing old trans. how much tolerance is acceptable as far as drive line angle is concerned?

i plan to put struts off the cross member to the upper frame.

Typically no more than 5 degrees is best (less is better, but they put a little fudge in there as the rear axle bounces up and down...those guys that jack the truck up remount the rear axle tilted to make up for the angle).

That mount should work great for the application (and would be stout enough for a warmed over small block as well).

You want the pinion angle to be the same as the out put shaft angle. They do not have to line up, but should be the same amount off level. You can use tapered shims to correct the pinion later if needed. Your craftsmanship looks quite nice.

hello all. thanks for the replies. got the eng/trans and pinion both at 4 degrees. got the sonnax throttle corrector, lokar flexible dipstick, throttle and TV cable installed, haven't adjusted TV yet.

getting the drive shaft ordered later this week from dennys. they are giving $50 bucks off thru the rest of the week.

I hate to sound like a wet blanket, but the driveshaft/trans angle set at 4 degrees is going to vibrate like hell. The front joint should be set to about 1/2 degree, and the rear set to 2-3 for a dailey driver. The idea is to compensate for drive axle wrap-up, and have the u-joints perfectly strait at WOT. Full blown, track only drag cars can use as much as 4-8 degrees at the rear joint.

BS6F, the 4 degrees aren't the u joint angles, it is the degrees at which the pinion shaft and trans shaft are set, if i read your post correctly. i will check those when the new drive shaft arrives and is installed. i see your point about the pinion angle changing under acceleration though. i guess i can adjust if needed.

i plan to install some sort of device (super-springs, caltech, trac bars...) and new leafs next year to reduce axle wrap.

great input from all. i love the things i learn along the way on this stuff. even though i have probably read most of it here already, it doesn't always "stick" until i work through a project.

greetings from the winter wonderland. tired of hibernating. hope all had a good holiday.

finally got the drive shaft delivered last week.

relative to the shop floor, both trans and pinion shaft are 4 degrees, and installed the shaft tube is 6 degrees, 2 degree u joint angles.

using a quality piece of 5/16-24 threaded rod and rod ends, got the column shifter connected. i used the bracket from the 727 with the plastic bushing, straightened it, GENTLY removed the welded stud, rebent it to be 3/4 inch shorter, redrilled the holw where the stud was to 7/16 and used the adapter plate bottom bolt hole as a mount pad.

the bad news is with the added spring tension of the throttle valve, the long throttle cable was struggling to pull the last 5-10% of throttle travel. it has been removed and i am putting the set up i had before, leaving the Lokar bracket in place for the TV cable.

it hasn't bothered me too bad to have the truck indoors during all the snow and cold, but can't wait to drive it. getting closer. :D

tomorrow is the day this experiment will yield some results, hopefully positive ones. everything is installed, triple checked and ready for filling, pressure check and then, as long as the psi checks good, drive.

repaired the speedo cable as the 200-4r has the same thread on the speedo drive. now if my gauge works? installed a VDO electric trans psi gauge.

will be using dexron 6 fluid.

hello. i put about 30 miles on the new trans and went well. very smooth operation of trans and driveline. all systems go, almost.

they mistakenly forgot to install a pressure switch for lockup in 3rd but will be easy to remedy requiring dropping the pan and installing switch and connecting a wire to existing 4th pressure switch.

converter stall is too high for my needs, lonnie (extreme automatics) is going to lower the stall on my existing converter.

O/D with lockup is awesome, 60 mph at about 1500 rpm. longer drives will be a pleasure.

thumbs up for extreme automatics, lonnie and i had email conversation until about 10 pm saturday and sunday nights.
