I have been running a protonix unit which has gone bad. When I got the unit they were the only one the market . Now Mallory , msd, acces, all make them. I have been reading that the protonix units have gone down hill. Does anyone have a suggestions one which one to use

None of the above. Start with an electronic distributor and do the HEI upgrade.

My pertronix ( I'm assuming this is what you mean) went bad in my '72 Valiant not too long ago and I switched back to points.....I never replaced the pertronix and I have been getting Standard brand points from Rock. I eventually will go with Dans advice.

My suggestion is to follow Dan's advice & go with the HEI system- it's fairly cheap, effective, & reliable. Hook everything to the car but don't install the distributor yet. Fit a gap-type spark tester to the coil output lead, turn the ign key ON & spin the dist by hand- should have lots of spark. Install the dist, fire it up, set timing, then forget about it.
