How hard would it be to rebuild the canister?

Activated charcoal is easy to find,

I'm not so sure about taking the canister apart.......

As soon as you turn off the ignition open your hood, say when you stop for gas.

Next when you start your car it should start ok.

What application did you use to look up that number?
Looks like it is 1985-1992 Subaru part.

I can't speak knowledgeably about this particular part, but in broad general, y'wanna buy the same part two and three and twelve times? Buy "Duralast". It's virtually all garbage.

So Well's products are no good either, ok.
Rock auto has SMP canister STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS CP3034
for 148.79
Summit racing has it 149.97 and free shipping.
Or you can get it from Auto parts Today and pay 332.30 ('') http://www.autopartstoday.com/item.wws? ... S&weight=5
Who would pay that?

It is truly amazing what people (apparently) get away with on the internet with their pricing.

I was just looking at a Marvel Avengers 10 DVD set in an aluminum briefcase, with various things, a mock (I hope) tesseract for my daughter. Amazon has it for $122 bucks and free two-day shipping, but also lists various vendors who sell used sets...one was asking $280 plus $4 shipping for a used set as a "collectible - like new"....hard to believe. It is always worth looking through at least 3 or 4 vendors to find the best prices.

Yeah, Greg, that guy did a great job.

The only reason these things are expensive is because they can be. plastic and charcoal, maybe some sheet metal...geez, Louise.

Those are some great links to canister "rebuilds". One thing that isn't mentioned is the purge valve -- the guy on the Jeep site went looking for a faulty vacuum diaphragm and didn't find it, but there is such a diapragm in the purge valve. If the purge valve is faulty (torn or hardened or holed diaphragm, for example) and doesn't work, there'll be problems. Easy enough to fix on a canister without a built-in purge valve (just replace the valve) but harder on a can with an integral valve.

Dan,
To check the purge valve, one would just pull vacuum on it correct?
If it holds vacuum it should be good?

It has to hold vacuum on its activation port, open when vacuum is applied, and close when vacuum is released.
