I installed a new oil pump today in a '61 Dodge D100. Pretty easy and straightforward - there's a lot of room to maneuver in the trucks. The new pump is a Sealed Power 224-4165C, a regular old pump. And it leaks.

When I pulled the old pump, I cleaned thoroughly around the area - it was pretty gunky, to the tune of 1/8" to 1/4" of 54 year old sludge. I used the gasket that came with the new pump.

It's leaking right where bolt #6 would be if it weren't a 5 bolt pump. I was able to slow the leak down quite a bit by pretty severely tightening down the bolts on either side of the "missing" bolt. But it still leaks about a drop every second at idle when I first start it up. I haven't let it run to get warm. Pressure is about 40psi at idle, 55 when I rev it up.

I'm using 5w30 oil and a Wix 51806 filter (previously it used the replaceable element filter). I'm not sure how to proceed here - double up the gasket? Use some kind of sealer?

i would try replacing the gasket and using silicone on both sides of it, also make sure the surfaces are clean and straight, no gunk or ncks or warpage

It was the right gasket. I replaced it with a new one, though, and used a little bit of Permatex RTV. It doesn't leak now.
