I have a slight knock back and forth in my steering that is coming from the "Coupler".

Is it best to Replace the whole part or rebuild it?

Do you mean an irregularity in motion when turning it, like it's sticking or klunking at some point?

Usually these are not replaced, but rather rebuilt using a kit. Like this:

The pin (top left in the pic) that holds the shoes sometimes break, or the shoes (funny shaped pieces middle left) wear or break or the spring that holds the shoes (bottom left) breaks. Usually the pot itself is OK.

But, if your pot is cracked or the splines are stripped or something, then yes, replacement is warranted.

Are you sure its the pot coupler and not the steering box?

Those darn lids on the pot couplers have little tabs that bend over the edge of the pot and into little recesses. This is supposed to hold the lid on and keep the grease protected, sealed in. I have never been able to get that part right, I've clamped the lid down, bent the tabs, then released, etc., but the lid always seems to come loose.

I recommend this item which totally fixes that problem.

My preference is heavily against those band-aid clip things, and heavily in favour of the (much!) improved slide-on cover available from Steer & Gear, separately or as a part of their rebuild kits. Their website's foozled at the moment, but 800-253-4327.

A friend of mine in MI found the same TSB and found one on at a dealer in HI and also found there was a shorter version which he acquired. He had 500 of each made and was selling them on-line and at various Mopar swap meets with and without a rebuild kit. He sold out to another vendor several years ago as he couldn't find another company local to him to make more of the clamps. Kind of hokey but hey, it's what Chrysler came up with to solve a problem.

I figured Dan had a better source/material for this. I'd never heard of Steer & Gear. That wire clamp is heavy/thick, and there's no way it's gonna leak. That said, the cap from Steer & Gear seems like a much more elegant solution; glad to see somebody is making some upgrades for the old mopars.

Hey, Dan, if you had your choice of steering gear vendors, which makes the best rebuilt gearbox, is that RedHead, Steer & Gear, Firm Feel or another vendor?
