a year, minus 4 days from when I started re working this car, a car that has basically sat in storage from 1980, and possibly from 1974,
I got it down a drag strip

https://www.flickr.com/photos/13718356@ ... 7563183853

Took it to the Lucas Oil RaceWay's Wild Wednesday Test and Tune,
and got it there towed by the 83 D150, which is another success.

http://www.lucasoilraceway.com/events/2 ... dnesday-2/

About the test and tune
my first time to run on the strip there.
maybe a 100 to 130 cars, lots of new Mustangs, Camero's , Challengers, saw one HellCat in the street tire group.
nice collection of 60's and 70's cars in the slick tire section, one guy had a Boss 302 in a Miata,,

the track got oiled down twice, but I got 2 runs in between 6:00 and 8:00,
talking with other racers, they said that is not that common to have that much down time, lot of nice friendly folks.

The first run, I was wanting only to get down the track in one piece with nothing falling off the car, with all the work done on the car, my only other test drive was a drive way burn out and a drive around the cul de sac. Well I let off the throttle twice and still went quicker than I ever did in the D150,,

Went back around, waited through another track clean up and made a second run,,, Moving along pretty well and noticed that the RPM's were pretty high, let off the throttle, looked down and noticed I had the auto selector in second, pushed it forward, tranny shifted to third and finished the run. A little quicker than the first one.

Two runs complete, nothing fell off, broke or leaked,
good day for me.

About the tow:
I built the D150 with the plan to tow the Barracuda,
and it did fine, never felt like the trailer was pushing the truck, stopped good, when going through the rebuild found that Dad had got this truck with a higher capacity than stock front axel and larger front and rear brakes, maybe like a heavy half ton package...
When pulling from a stop on an uphill grade, needed to slip the clutch a bit to get it rolling (3.21 rear axel), once it starts rolling, give it some gas and it pulls away. Pulling from level stops is fine.

so there it is,, The 68 Barracuda made it down the track and the 83 D150 pulled it there and back,, all without issues,, been a good day! :D

Big congrats, John! Must feel like a million buckaroos.

But, you are killing us drag racers... What did it run?! We all know you will run a second or two faster when all is polished.

What did it run?!
1) stock A body, with the interior stripped out, no additional lightening
2) stock: OE bores, pistons, bearings and valves, raised compression to 8.4, a nice exhaust header, super six carb and intake, with a super secret cam
3) stock 904 and converter, 3:55 rear gears

what should it run ?

I got something to toy with this winter,, and have fun with for years to come. There will be time slips.....

330 7.420
1/8 11.656

The important part is you made it there and back with no breakage. The speed will come later. :D

plans for the winter,,

1 ) build a reliable 904..
2 ) put it in the 68 Barracuda

sounds simple enough,,

the 8.75 rear and sure grip is rebuilt
the engine is a work in progress
the OE tranny is an opportunity for improvement

picked up a spare 904, s/n traces to a 1974 198/225

took it apart down to the case today,

https://www.flickr.com/photos/13718356@ ... 0522634988

called A&A, dropped Wayne V's name a few times,
lets see where this goes,
what I am looking for is, a 904 that meets these requirements:
1) supports a max of 300 HP
2) demonstrates run to run consistency
3) is built for season to season reliability
4) provides value

I want the 68 Barracuda to be a fast 4 speed street car, for now it will be an auto strip car, let's see where this goes..

Great John,
904's can be built to handle about 1000 HP - Ask Rick at A&A - 300 should be a breeeeeeze!

Can you send me some pics of the rear band on that trans? or even the rear of the inside of the case?

Doing some research.

Thanks,

Greg

My '67 Valiant 100 with full interior, stock '67 short block (including cam), big valve head, 8.5:1 compression, Offy intake, Holley 390 carb, cleaned up stock exhaust manifold, 2.25" full exhaust, 3.21 gears and column shifted 3-speed manual would go 17-flat most places and went 16.88 at Woodburn.

No headers, no cam change.

At Redding one year I drove Sergio's '68 Dart and it ran about the same ET as my Valiant, but at less weight as it had a stripped interior. Stock motor aside from the Super Six and headers.

If you are chasing a lower ET I would get an adapter to run a big Holley 2 bbl and match the adapter to the intake. Epoxy and grinding will be needed for a good match. A big 2 bbl from a 360 or 400 are also fine choices and may even best a Holley in driveability.

The fuel injection install is complete
the car starts, idles fine,

here is a link to the fuel injection thread for this car

http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=59051

to do any real FI tuning I need to get the car on a strip or dyno,
prior to running the car hard, I was needing to upgrade the tires, and now that box is also checked.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/13718356@ ... 8113263980

Tires are 215x60x16,,, 40K Michelin tires that came off the wife's Altima when she wanted new tires at the start of last winter. Plenty of life left in those tires for what I'll be doing with them.

Wheels are Torque Thrust II
16x7 4.0 backspace on the front
16x8 4.9 backspace on the rear

front wheels, 15.5 lbs
rear wheels, 17.5 lbs

and today I finished the install of an electric trailer brake controller on the 83 D150,,still trailer shopping...
