Does the keyway and the timing mark line up on a stock harmonic balancer? In other words are they indexed the same? I am trying to determine if the outer ring on my harmonic balancer has slipped.

According to Damper Dudes, the mark is supposed to be 5 degrees off of the keyway. I'm not so sure I'd trust them though...

The timing mark is not in line with the keyslot.
Different years have the mark in different places but none line-up exactly to the keyway.

Doc, do you have a list of what it should be for various years? I flipped through the engine section in the service manual and couldn't find anything.

I have three balancers and all three have the timing marks in a different location. I do not know which one if any are correct and I can not accurately time the engine. Tomorrow I will get a gauge to find TDC and go from there.

The location of the timing mark (tab) is the "deciding factor" for the dampner mark.
In general:
60-67 had a bolt-on timing tab on the left side of the engine, the damper mark is at "1 o-clock" with the dampner keyway being 12:00

68-79(?) had the timing tab welded to the cover so it can be seen from the passenger (right) side of the car. The dampner mark is at 4:00

80 and up have a tube in the timing tab at TDC and the dampner mark moved slightly, kinda at 3:30

Best bet, use the positive stop methode to find true TDC and punch your own timing mark. I also punch two marks at 30 & 35 degrees so I can check the total timing without a fancy timing retard timing light.

I recently(two weeks ago) pulled grabbed a spare damper off a 1978 Aspen and it had the 'tube' type tab, FYI....

Doc, I have a 70something motor, but in any case the tab on the timing chain cover is on the passenger side.

You say the timing mark should be at 4 oclock. That means over 90 degrees of seperation.... That sure is way off compared to the 5 degrees I was quoted.....
