Antifreeze wasn't good enough to get through this past winter. Been in the garage for 3 or 4 years and decided that was long enough and started moving Hoopty around in preparation of a minor resurrection.. saw a little antifreeze and dismissed it at first. Bad deal.. cracked block. DOH

Anyway, I'm looking at a few options .. I've found a low mileage slant in a 72 dart and one in a 79 dodge truck. I keep coming back to the truck engine because it has Dutra manifolds and by the pics, it may be a Super 6 manifold. Can't quite tell by the pic he sent but I'll post a pic. I figure I can sell the intake and make some of my money back and the Dutras... I may have to keep :D

I know there were a few changes in the 70s and is there anything that would change my mind about using either of those engines in my '64?

Crank register change is the biggest thing. It changed in 67 (?) and means a swap to newer transmission, or a special torque converter, which I have found hard to source. If you have a standard transmission, means a flywheel swap...otherwise, I had no major issues changing to a later motor in my 65.

I'm a standard 3 speed.. any idea what flywheel I'd have to with?

Actually.. the 79 is a manual. Maybe I can get the flywheel with it

It will depend on your clutch or starter location...

If you have the 9 1/4" or 10" clutch you can use any 1968-1987 122 tooth flywheel, or you can take your flywheel to your machinist and have him open the
register hole to fit the larger crank register...these had the high mount starter...

Similarly you can have the same thing done for the 11" clutch flywheel (low mount starter) in getting the flywheel honed out...this would be preferred
as there is a variation in tooth count between the 70's 11" clutch flywheel and the early 60's flywheel, as well as an offset in the flywheel hub that makes
up for the difference in bellhousing styles between the two generations...

If the price was right I would take the late one with the super six and dutra duals, it would make a nice upgrade.

Thanks.. Great answer. Looking at the pictures, the starter location "looks" the same as mine.

How about electronics? Swap distributors or leave as is?

I can buy the whole truck (in pieces) cheap.. but I don't need or want the whole truck, so I'm trying to strike a deal.

The slant in the 72 Dart is $300 but that seems a little high for what it is. I mean I guess it's fair but I've seen several (when I didn't need one) for a lot less

If you purchase the truck motor, I will buy/trade for the oil pan, pickup tube, dipstick and tube and the engine mount brackets. I have the same parts for a late a-body or a feather duster intake to trade. I also have cash.

I'm in Martinsville.. formerly from Mooresville.

I think you and I have talked before .. mayyyybe. I know Wvenable in Mooresville so maybe it's through him that your name is familiar? He actually has the original Slant out of Hoopty... or did have. Was toxic waste as he called it lol. Sent him a PM looking for a motor lead but haven't heard back from him.

Not sure that I'm looking to build a motor at this point..I start getting carried away when I build stuff. Appreciate the offer and if you come across a runner, I'd really appreciate.

Going in a 64 A100 Truck. But I'm sure I'll reuse alot of my old stuff. If there's left overs, I'll just do the Karma thing and charge you shipping :D

Looks can be deceiving... I guess it's possible that the antifreeze wasn't diluted enough. I'll test tonight.

Looking at motors and reminding myself that I don't HAVE to replace the cam with something lumpy. Just stick to the basics Dan.. Dan, hey DAAANNN! Basics
