I am still looking for anyone in the LA area who would be willing to drop by PML and let them look at a slant six and how it fits in the engine compartment.

They would like to move the side walls out to the edge of the gasket flange. I do not think this would cause any problems but I am not sure about the earlier cars. the side walls would be much thicker so they would be more rigid with better clamping force.

this is what this would look like go down a few to 7872-5(finned cad 500)

Are there any clearance issues with the older cars?

Steve,

Haven't found anybody yet either, still working on it. Come on Angelenos, it won't take much time and a new product is always welcome.
Took a look at the Caddy reference piece and like what I see. Do you know whether they're looking at angling the top of the box parallel to the deck or to the ground? As yet I've had no response to my own inquiries, I think they'd prefer to deal with just one person. Makes sense to me.

Don't give up, Dick

I have a '66 Valiant, and there are no clearance problems that I can see. I can send you pics of the engine compartment if you need them.

Thanks Dennis

I would appreciate a few photos of your 66. My 69 is in parts and pieces so pictures won't do any good. We may need some other photos from other cars if anyone else has some good clear ones. It will be tough do design a new product from long if nobody in LA steps up.

I would want the top of the cover be in the same plane as stock.

and everyone remeber to let PML know what you think about a new valve cover and what you want to see in it. The more e-mails and phone calls they get the better our chances.

I would be glad to stop by but the 3000 mile drive from Pa. with 4.30 gears is just a bit much!! I'll be glad to get you some photos of our 72 swinger engine compartment if they will help?? Just let me know.
The truth of the matter is, with over a thousand members to this board, if no one steps up out in LA., maybe we don't deserve a new valve cover?? If someone is willing to design us a new product, this should be the least we can do to help them. Just my 2 cents worth.

Rick

Thanks

if you could send me a couple of close ups of the valve cover area that would help. It looks like I will have to gather up what pictures I can and send them to PML in place of seeing a couple of cars in person.

Thanks
Steve

Brent at PML would like to know if the outter most turned down lip on the gasket flange is needed for proper sealing(gasket retention or just rigidity) any input would be helpful. the new cover would be a thick wall AL and have a heavy flange for sealing.

thanks
Steve

The fins and script on the 7872-5 are milled down into the surface of the part instead of being raised features. I know with pictures on the computer it can be a little hard to tell.

As far as moving the walls on the slant 6 valve cover outward all the way to be flush with the flange, I'm just trying to understand what the design constraints are for a new cover. The finished design may have an external flange like the stock cover (certainly would if there is something non flexible running right up against the side of the valve cover) or it might be similar to our 7872 valve covers. Not being familiar with the ins and outs of the slant 6 engine and it's plumbing/wiring etc, I'm relying on you to give us the information needed.

Did you have any information about the need for a turned down lip on the outer edge of the gasket flange? Is this something you guys want/need for gasket retention?

Where is PML located? I'm in Los Angeles and could stop by there on one of my off days providing that I'm not busy. If I'm correct I have three differrent valve covers that I can show them. I have 2 68s, a 75, and a 78. I also have a chrome valve cover that I took off of a 63 truck that I found in the JY. I'll have to double check to see if its stock or after market.

The lip is to help reinforce the sheet metal valve cover and keep the gasket from puckering out.

I live in Salem, and have a couple of covers and heads that are 'just lying around' until I get them cleaned up for the 'next phase'. You can PM me and we can set up a free moment so you can get some measurements and take all the pics you want.

They have some neet covers! And nice thick flanges I would take one of them!

Thanks dusteridiot for the offer but I already sent them a factory cover to look at and at this point they just want to know if a wide flat AL flange would seal or do they need to machine a lip like the factory cover has to keep the gaskets from squirting out. this extra step would cost a little more money.

Also if anybody has real tight clearance issues around the valve cover and some other part on some models that might make a difference as to how they build the new one

thanks
Steve

As for clearance issues, the 60-62 Valiants & Lancers with a "tall block" 225 will have tight clearance to the firewall mounted heater box.

About the recess / outer flange, yes, that would be good to have, along with the little cut-outs that accept the tabs of the valve cover gasket.
Without these features, the valve cover gasket become a pain to install, you have to glue it to the cover to be sure it does not slip off the sealing flange. The extra cost is worth it in saved installation trouble, besides, if you are going to make a nice "high-end" product like this, don't cut corners, make it a "trick" part that is as easy to use as the factory cover.
