It's a 68 Valiant. When I removed the engine Saturday, it was the first time it had been out, It had a good run, lol.

It had all the signs of an engine that had spent a lot of its life on the cruddy oils that existed for many decades. But also of someone using non-detergent motor oil. There was a solid crust of hard dirt on the bottom of the pan. Not oily sludge, but almost-dry crud. The entire pickup was under the dirt, so whatever oil it was getting was making its way through a little hole that found its way in the crud.

The 170 is missing a lot of stuff, water pump, carb, accessories, etc. I don't think the 170 would be that much lighter than an equal 225.

The 170 is missing the alternator and associated brackets. It's also missing the ignition coil and water pump/pulley and the motor mounts and some smaller brackets like the PS mount and throttle bracket. And carb.

But, it has a lighter crank and 1" less of cast iron deck. Plus (I believe) shorter rods.

When I strip the 225 down, I'll try to make it equal the 170 in terms of 'stuff' and we'll see what the difference is.

OK....here is the 225 in the same state of dress as the 170. There are tiny differences, like the throttle bracket is still on the 225, but they're essentially the same.

I actually thought the difference would be more. As for bolted-on stuff, the big offender was the alternator (and cast iron bracket). I didn't weigh it but it sure had some heft.

Just an FYI....
The cast iron alternator mount weighs in at 2.8 lbs.
My 65 alternator weighed 13 lbs.
I did manage to shave the factory bracket down 1.15 lbs., but still heavy for what it does.

As someone who has owned lots of Mopars (which are almost always heavier than their competitors) I've gotten more interested in cars that don't weigh more than they need to.

As a Hellcat owner, it amazes me that the car can be so freakin' fast yet still is a portly 4500lbs. That's over 1200lbs. more than my '68 499" Barracuda which has had no real lightening done to it aside from 'naturally occurring' hot rodding stuff.

I am an avid drag racer and I have always been conscious of weight. I have a huge spreadsheet with all sorts of weights listed. The 225 is listed as weighing in at 475 lbs. My race motor is coming in at just under 400lbs (NOT an aluminum block). Less mass = better performance.
Oh, I would LOVE to have a Hell Cat engine in my 07 Magnum. Too much is not enough.....
