my 68 valiant with 225 is running like crap. it runs fine at idle, but as soon as i put a load on it, it misses very badly. i rebuilt the carb and threw cap, rotor wires and plugs on it and timed it the best i could without a light. still misses on accel. could this be a points problem? any ideas would be greatly appreciated! plz help!!!

Replace points/condensor. Probably wouldn't hurt to change plugs, too. Motor will run fine after you do this.

It could be fuel related also-- check condition of fuel filter, fuel pump, and accel.pump in the carb.Sounds like a fuel starvation problem.

my 67 sat for 9 years before we got it and acted similar, previous owner had left it full of gas for all that time the sending unit was clogged, so if it sat and the other stuff doesnt work, that would be my next step, good luck!

I stand by my ignition assessment, from the description, sounds to me like the condenser is going out or the points are toast - but really hard to tell fer sure without the car in front of us, now isn't it? Good suggestions, all...

Rhyno, please go buy (or borrow?) a cheap timing light. There's no excuse for not using one - Some really screwy timing could be contributing to the problem, too.

I second the timing light. my car will idle fine anywhere from 15*after to 10* before top dead center.

we went through the ignition stuff first, and it still did it, so thats why i said if ignition doesnt fix it that could be the problem, mine idled great, sounded perfect, "we finally got it running! lets go for a drive!" got up to 50ish and started to sputter...carb rebuilt to....
try the ignition stuff first, if it doesnt fix it it will still help it run better/better mileage
good luck

Get rid of the points and get a Pertronix electronic set up or the factory electronic ignition. Best thing you will ever do to your car. I hated pulling the distributer out every time I had to change points, and I have a B body with more room!

Oh yeah, all hail Dennis!

Or better yet, if you want even more of a challenging project, get rid of the distributor all together and set up a crank trigger/dis.
