How hot can you get the gear before you have to worry about any heat treating it may have?


I'm just wondering if the technique I used with my lawn mower flywheel would work.

I cranked up the gear puller, then took my plumbers torch to the flywheel. After about a minute the flywheel popped loose.

Kinda complicated because this is dependent on the amount of carbon in the iron / steel.
In general, you will not impact hardness if you stay under 1000 degrees F.

I agree there is no one magic threshold temperature, but physical properties start to change I believe as the material approaches 700F.
