Rick,
Mask up and get one of those shanks, Covalt's or Houpt's to help pull that head and engine.
If I were closer I would help.

Cheers!

Greg

She's more than welcome to! :D

I'll get to work on it some today. May have new cam, timing chain and reassembly of the engine done. Then I'll get some help to wrestle her back into the truck on Monday.

Ok I finally got the engine back into the truck ( Thanks Denny) and got it running on Christmas Eve. I like to hear new or changed engines run and get oil pressure before I take a breath. :D I fixed a couple small water leaks and ran it up to temperature and broke the cam in for 20 minutes. Sat the timing to 12 degrees and adjusted the carb. It still has my 500 Edelbrock on it which is probably jetted a little lean for the bigger cam and better flowing head but I will deal with that later.

So to the good stuff.

Engine recap:

225 with .473 220@ .050 cam.
Engine was re-ringed and had bearing (std) installed about 5 years ago.
Ran for 4 or 5 racing season only. No street miles.
Self imposed 5200 RPM was never exceeded
I installed the a cam ( Identical to the one I pulled out) so it had a "perfect" drive gear
Installed the new Dutra 14T oil pump and gear that he sent me.

Engine started and it picked up oil pressure just a few seconds later.
Oil pressure was @ 45-46# cold and stayed close to that the whole time the cam was broken in at @1600 rpm
Shut the engine down and left it sit, started a couple more times and ran till warm
Total run time on the engine / gear was about 40 minutes

Went back out this morning and started the engine ( 22 degrees out)
Oil pressure was about 48# cold
Ran engine again for 20 minutes, everything looked OK.
Took truck down the road two times . Ran it up through the gears to @ 4500 rpm several times.
Bring back into the garage and document the oil pressure Hot.

Engine RPM---- Oil pressure
650-------12#
750-------16
850-------18
1000------22
1200------26
1400------31
1600------36
2000------43
2500------48
Above 2500 @ 50

Total run time so far was @ 1hr 40 min.

These oil pressure at lower RPM are lower than I would have expected.
I think this engine always had over 40 when hot at @ 1000-1200 rpm. Although I can't be 100% sure about that.
Engine ran well and now the plans are to drain coolant, jack up the engine off the mounts and remove the oil pump to see the pattern on the new Dutra gear. Pictures to follow.

More to follow.

I am sorry I don't have good news on the oil pump gear. As I mentioned over in my truck thread in the Virtual Dragstrip section, I had a whine that I was attributing to the chain guide I installed in the timing cover. However after getting the oil pump out and looking at the gear, I believe the noise I hear is the oil pump gear. Or at least that is a possability. Here are the pictures of the oil pump gear after @ 1 hr 40 min run time. Gear pattern is wide across the gear face but it has already started cutting into the gear and I would suspect the cam as well. I will try and get Ryan's snake camera and see if we can look at the cam gear a little better.

I hope Doug sees this and chimes in on what he thinks, and what I should do next. I would guess reassemble evertything and run it for a while and pull it again. Maybe 500 miles or so? I did cut open the oil filter and found nothing inside to indicate my chain guide was a culprit.

Hmmm. I still haven't got mine installed yet, due to life and other things, but I still am hoping to get it installed soon. Did you do any kind of lapping or use assembly lube when you installed it?

Can you post a more high-resolution and larger photo? It looks like the pump drive gear is quickly wearing away.

No lapping but I coated both gears with assembly lube. Yes the gear is wearing

Click this photo. That is as large as it will allow me to upload.

Yes, I am leaning that way, although I am guessing the cam doesn't look to good either. I hope to hear from Doc. I may be able to get the scope to look at the cam tomorrow. Rick

A lot of wear for the short amount of run time... :(
Do not run that gear any longer, it's going to eventually fail.
The good news is that the contact pattern seems well centered.
The pressure readings are lower then I like to see but this is the smallest impeller pump. (5/8)
I am wondering about the whine sound... I did not hear that with the one I tested. :?
We need to re-look at the gear tooth geometry.

I did use the scope today to try and get a better look at the cam. As always(for me) looking into a hole with bad eyes with poor lighting options and limited room makes for a bad combination. On top of that, these are pictures of the scopes screen. I could not figure out how to get it to take a picture.

I know these are not good but it did look to me that the wear on the gear was not terrible. Although none would be better I could not see anything that will keep me from running the cam. I got a good Dutra pump with the extra spray tube and a very nice well used gear. I already assembled it and will probably try and get it back together and running Monday. Once it is back up and running I should be able to tell if the whine is gone.

The wear I could see did not appear to be in the middle of the cam gear.
It also appeared to be up higher on the tooth. ( To the outside)
Doug just let me know if you want the pump sent back and to where. I know you have a lot going on so you take your time. It can set here as long as need be.

Are you able to swap a gear if I send you a 13T factory one?
Re-running the test with a factory 13T gear on the same pump will give us some good info. on the pressure difference that 1 tooth makes.

Yes if you can get it to me quickly. Like Fed-EX 2 day delivery? I really need to get the truck back on the road before too long.

Let me check 1st thing in the morning and see if I have another gear I can get off. I really don't want to take off the one I just pushed onto your modified pump.

How much variance is there in the alignment of the gears between camshafts , blocks , and oil pumps?

Just wondering if tolerances went against you this time...................
