I was going through cranks the past couple of rainy days.
I have always run the big cranks, and I have another nice one I can use if we can't fix the snout on my current crank.
But!
On the advice of someone much smarter than I, I started looking at my little cranks.
I thought I had a winner till I got down to #6.
If it doesn't clean up at .030 it's going into the machine shop scrap bin!

Then I looked at another little crank.
On first glance it looked like crap.
It looked rusty, till I took a razor plate to a journal.
It was like cosmoline, but it was gunk.
Like it was dipped in a wash tank sludge.
I have no idea where I got it.
But a couple of hours later it is a standard dimension crank on rods and mains.
Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner.
Glad I didn't throw it away.
And if I use it, the car will be a few lbs. lighter.

Now to figure out the damper issue.

Crank shop called, the "junk" crank is just that.
I will talk with them on Thursday, he said he could weld it.
Didn't say how much!

Pounding out freeze plugs now.
Block is pretty clean as are most of the parts.

Spent some time on the phone with Dave Mueller this afternoon.
He has some real good ideas, I think I know now how I am going to measure for piston valve reliefs.

Hi Stan,
I wonder how far the crank needs to be turned? Or are you talking about the chewed up damper snout surface? 225 cranks can go 0.060" under no problem and King may still make those bearings. I know I bought some 0.040" and/or 0050" under bearings from them pretty recently.
If you have trouble finding a crank, I would happily give you one, as long as we can find a way to get it there.

Build a little crate for that cranky, and ship it via Pirate ship using UPS it will be less than the cost of Prius fuel from va to tx.
You just need to weigh it and XYZ dminesion it.

I shipped an A230 transmission with a shifter and rods. - I built a little shipping coffin and sent it to Colorado for ~$120 It weighed over 110# My buyer paid all of the shipping and materials cost.

I have other cranks so no issue there.
This is the #6 journal on one of the cranks I carried to the machine shop.

I polished the snout with a high speed buffing wheel.
Pressed a stock damper on and pulled off.
MUCH easier than the ROMAC.

One is probably a pre-1962 (3) Crank.

I bet engineers figured that they could make a reliable engine with much less Iron in their forgings and still get a reliable 145 HP.

Stock dampers are fine for just about everything, IMHO, if in good shape. I've seen a few heavy/big cranks, but not too many...

Got the little crank back and it's sitting in the block.
Starting to map a couple of cams to see which way to go.

I got some go fast parts in the mail today.
Head and a RB STX-21 cam.
Starting to work on them and the million details to get an engine together.

Measured a couple of cams, STX-21 it is.
Worked on the new head, lots of good stuff, some stuff not so crazy about.
It has the rocker pedestals milled clean off.
It has some aluminum saddles to hold the shaft, just wish there was more steel left.
Big Manley SS valves, chevy stems, great looking ports.
Going to use my Goodman roller rockers, they leave good retainer to rocker clearance.
Going to need a new set of Smith Bros push rods.
Chambers measure, and I did this 3 times, 30 CC.
Compression will be in the 13 range.
Spent some time today talking with Gary Bruner, Will and Mark.
That helped.
