Hello all. My friend Jim owns a '62 Valiant. It's been sitting awhile, and he wants to go through various systems to make the car roadworthy. Does anyone on the Slant Six Forum have recommendations for a trusted mechanic and / or engine rebuild shop in Spokane, Washington?

Sorry, I am in Tacoma, on the other side of the State from Spokane. In don't get over there often enough to know of any good shops for old cars.

That said, these are fairly simple vehicles. You can do quite a bit yourself with a factory service manual and a decent set of tools (and a somewhat deep wallet, these days).

S&J Engines is out of Spokane, they are a large rebuilder and regularly do crate 225s. Being local, they'll probably do your block if you prefer

Hello EC_CO. The S & J Engine shout out is super helpful...thank you! I will pass this information on to my friend Jim.
S & J is literally a 10 minute drive from his house.

I read on this forum where you have done a lot of work on the car you acquired from your dad. Spokane winters can be pretty rough on a car out in the elements.

Yesterday I spoke with Jim and he told me his list for refreshing his '62 Valiant:

Motor
Transmission (push button automatic - shift kit if possible?)
Brakes - Front disc brake conversion (if possible?)
Shocks
14" wheel / tire combo with chrome moon hubcaps
He also said he thinks the carburetor is a single barrel, and that he would like to do a intake manifold & 2 (or 4?) barrel carburetor conversion.

If anyone has thoughts or input on the list (what may or may not be possible, shop referrals, etc.) please chime in.

Glad I could help, sounds like an ideal situation since he lives so close. Thankfully on my Barracuda the rust issues weren't too terribly bad, though still not cheap. My total paint and body costs are about 17 grand, I should have it back from paint at the end of this month.

Others that are more knowledgeable will chime in, he certainly has both two barrel and four barrel options available, but my guess is the two bbl upgrade would do him just fine.

Whatever you do or shop you choose..

Demand that they use a high quality timing set such as a rollmaster from australia, regularly available on eBay from falcon global.

Also ask that they degree your cam even for a stock rebuild.

The dot method of setting timing according to the FSM no longer works with questionable cheap timing sets and other mix n match possibly older parts.

The extra cost af these small parts and services will help your overall slanting experience.

Yep. Pretty sure I read about an issue with misalignment or saw a video. No firsthand experience, my self. I have never used the Rolmaster. I have used either the "good" (old) quality stock type sets, or the Cloyes double roller sets.

Easy Fix to sand / mill for rearward clearance or use some cut down oil slinger for forward clearance.

Yes, mine had to be cut in order to get the crank gear on farther. Seems like it was .060 or .080"
