I removed the flywheel from my 76 225 Dart Sport.
There is a huge inertia ring cast into the back of the flywheel.
122 tooth flywheel with standard clutch pattern, around 10 inches.
Starter teeth are pretty chewed up, so I was going to swap with a better wheel I have.

What is the deal with the big ring flywheel?

You used to be able to get just the starter ring and press on a new one. Not sure if they are still available. All cast cranks, AFAIK, are all neutral balance just like the forged ones, so flywheels interchange. Maybe they wanted to put extra mass on because the crank got lighter? I have an alum flywheel on my high RPM cast crank (ltwt 62 lb) motor and it feels great. You notice it won't drive off as smoothly as a heavy crank and 'wheel, but no biggie. Engine is smooth as silk, vibration-wise.

Usually the 225 stock iron flywheels are around 20-22 lbs. I think I've seen 1-2 that were more like 28-30 lbs, but I'm not sure I'm remembering correctly. Maybe those were the big ones for 11" clutch. Aftermarket standard size aluminum flywheels are 10-12 lbs.

My 79 Aspen cast crank 3 speed had a regular flywheel.

Your 2.76/ 2.71 with the 3.09 is still only an 8.52:1 / 8.37:1 ish gear depending on tire size.
