Does anyone have any cheep but effective improvemets I can make to it while I have it on the bench

I'm thining of doing some porting. So some advice about this would be helpfull.

Also going to deck it 30 thou. Do you think I should deck more?

It's a stock late sixties dart with the two barral set up.

I just want it make it an 'improved' daily driver without spending big $

Put some sort of thermal coating on the valve faces to help reduce the chances of detonation.

Do the porting work and "Back-cut" the intake valves.
Also deburr / remove any sharp edges out of the combustion chamber.
I would take at least .060 off the head.

Is there a hard and fast reason why it is almost universally recommended to cut the head to gain compression rather than cutting the block? It would seem that either way would work and that by cutting the block you have a more precise measure on how much you are bumping the compression because the cylinder is perfectly round whereas the head cavity is not.

My first thought, is that by shaving the block you will obliterate the engine serial number. Second, if you want to go back to stock you have to replace the block rather than the head. Im sure there are more.

A head is also a lot easier to strip and setup in a mill.

Either way is fine. Mainly it depends on which you have apart to do machining on. Too much off either (0.100" is safe) will decrease strength though.
