I'm changing the trans fluid tomorrow. I misplaced my shop manual and can't remember how many pints my 904 takes, including the torque converter. I want to say 17 pints, but need to know for sure! Also, does anybody have a brand preference for the trans fluid? I use Valvoline Dexton III last time (4 or more years ago). The fluid now is not the red it should be....its almost like an orange!

My 65 factory manual says...................

Transmission and Torque Converter 17 pints.



As for brand, no idea as I haven't done it on mine yet...

I alwez go ahead and get a case, just to be on the safe side! 17 or 18 pints sounds about rite.

I get the cheapest stuff (Coastal, Kmart, whatever), just cause that's how I am, but I like Valvoline oil, so your choice sounds good to me. The dexron is usually a bit more "orangey-red", type F is typically a darker blood red.

Any Dexron fluid on the market today is vastly better than the stuff available when our cars were new.

That said, Chrysler's Mopar ATF+4 is so vastly superior to any Dexron that I use it in all my Torqueflites, even the oldies.

Funny you mention cheap Dennis, I was thinking about using Napa brand since their motor oil is made by Valvoline (so I've heard, plus, a napa and Valvoline bottle both have the same company name on the back). Dan, is the Mopar ATF+4 available anywhere other than the dealer? Is it like type F in its friction qualitys?

...tis true. Ashland Oil Company. NAPA and Valvoline are interchangeable. Some other part store brands are Valvoline in disguise as well.

Dealer-only until, ummm...last month, when licensing was started. Don't know if anyone's put an ATF+4 on the aftermarket yet. I pay the dealer price because (a) it's worth it and (b) I don't pay retail—nobody has to who doesn't want to.
Er...no.

Type F is a thoroughly outdated, thoroughly inferior old fluid.
