It sounds like this is a "reman" engine. Major engine reman shops use the screwed on or riveted tags. If the engine was done by one of these places, most likely they took a cut of the top of the block, and this could remove the factory numbers.

thanks Charlie..i suspected something like that..too bad..it does have solid lifters so i guess its pre 1980 and it does look like its a rebuild..actually looks pretty good inside except it looks like no one ever changed the oil..

The only things you need to be concerned about, as for the year, for parts, is: solid/hydraulic valve train, and cast/forged crank. Everything else will not make any difference in the year. You need to be more concerned with over/under sizes, that were used during the rebuilding process.

No, actually, it's more complicated than that. The changeover from forged to cast was in the middle of 1976 production. All 1975 slant-6s have forged cranks, some 1976s have forged, some 1976s have cast, and all 1977-up have cast.

This is for US/Canada/Mexico production; other plants worldwide may well have stayed with forged right through to the end. (Argentina-Slantsixer?)

That is just plain wrong -

77 and up would be cast cranks.

Whoops, bad things happen when I post before breakfast. I've fixed it.

The problem Valiant Effort is having, is, he doesn't know the year of the engine. I have been looking for my bearing book, so I could post the bearing sizes for the cast/forged crank, but it is misplaced.
The forged crank has a 1, 2, 4, main bearing width, slightly larger then 1 inch. The cast crank has a 1, 2, 4, bearing width less then 1 inch.

yes, that is true, I just go with the "76 up" statement when I am browsing the local yards to avoid getting a cast.

truth be told, I have have never had a crank or bearings fail anyway

I also have a remafactured engine with a riveted tag on the block right side front just above the oilpan. It is painted black. My truck is a 67, but now the engine--block and/or head could be almost anything. I do have spark plug tubes--they are moist.

Guessing from the posts, I am looking for an earlier block with a forges crank, and a later head with hydralic lifters?
