If I was to add a filter to the tranny line, I'd just plumb in an remote spin-on filter adaptor and use spin-on oil filters.................. (but not FRAMs..)

And throw in an add-on cooler at the same time.

You don't need it on your 64. I was posting this for those, with the earlier cars, who want to keep them original.

OK, this brings up a question. I have a 62; the tranny pan has a drain plug and there is an external filter in one of the cooling lines. I would like to get rid of the external filter and switch to the later internal filter. I have a scrap transmission but I don't know its vintage. It is, however, a cable operated tranny but the pan has no drain plug. It does have a screen strainer rather than a filter. How can I easily determine if that pan will accomodate the internal style filter? I also have a later tranny from a column shift car but i don't want to cannabalize it, at least not yet.

The internal strainer, pan w/drain plug and external filter was used through '63. The internal 2-port filter was used '64-'65, and the slightly modified pan for filter clearance and w/o drain plug was used from '64 on up.

So, you need a '64-up pan and a '64-'65 2-port filter.

OK, got that. The spare pan I have does not have a drain plug but what does "slightly modified" mean? Comparing the 2, the original pan has a drain plug and the bottom if the pan is completely flat and smooth; the pan off of the spare parts tranny does not have a drain plug and the bottom has an embossed circle, no more than 1/4 inch deep. Is that the one I need?

Yep, the "embossed circle" pan is the one you need. You may want to take the opportunity to install a drain plug kit in it.

Yeah, he has a few. I actually ended up selling mine to him and just converting to the later style filter. Seemed a lot easier and simpler.

Like Dan said, use the pan with the little "circle" pop-out and you're good to go. The filter bolted right into my 62 valve body no problem at all.

A drain plug sure would be nice to add while you have it out!
