i am wondering if anyone has tried turning down the counter weights on a
forged crank and if so where there any balancing problems???

also are there any aftermarket balancers availible????can a small or big block balancer be modified to work????

has anyone ever used olds valves it looks like with a lash cap they will be the correct lenght and i can turn the head size down to what i need.

any help would be greatly apreciated

Some people have lightend slant cranks. Doug had some pictures posted someware, but I couldn't find them. Fisher has a balencer for the slant. Also a big block balencer can be used with some minor modifications, but the pulleys do not line up. Have no idea on the valves.

I overheard Doug explaing about the crank lighteneing out in Vegas. IIRC, when the bob weights are cut, Mallory metal has to be added making the entire process a wash.

As far as valves go, Ferrea is making a drop-in Slant valve now that is relatively low cost. (or so I've been told)

Answer this question - Why did the factory put the large counter weights on the crank to begin with?

I removed 10 pounds from a stock weight crankshaft. THAN I took it to the machine shop and they rebalanced the shaft. This was after the poor guy spend serveral ??? hours TRYING to rebalance it. When I picked up the crank he asked me if this was a running engine because he had never seen a crank so far out of balance.....so I just played dumb and said I didn't have any history of that crank. Well it has been in my car for 2 years now with no problems. It was worth it BUT it was also lots of work and money. As far as damper I just use a big block and change the front seal.

Also, the later cast crank motors have much lighter cranks, apparently. The 80s ones supposedly only weigh about 55-60 lbs. I believe this is what Rodney has had in the Lancer for the last 3-5 yrs of drags w/ no issues.
