So, what are the sounds and symptoms of the overrun clutch going bad in a 904?

I have a bad feeling about my drive home last night.

Greg

So, not getting any response, let me tell you what happened, and hopefully, it will ring a bell with somebody. The tranny seems fine as I am getting up to speed or holding a steady speed. If I take my foot off the gas, or hit the brakes ( slowing down in traffic, taking a corner, etc), I am hearing a buzzing or rumbling coming from what I think is the transmission.

So, whatta ya think? Overrunning clutch? It makes sense to me.

Thanks,

Greg

I would spend the time to drop the trans. pan and take a look for signs of trouble. (pieces of metal)

Low fluid or poor fluid flow (plugged filter) can cause a buzzing sound.
In general. a OR clutch problem is hard to spot prior to complete failure.

I will give that a try. I should replace the filter anyway. It may be the original, given the rest of the maintenance that I have seen.

I saw a few bright bits of metal in the pan. The magnet test picked up only a few, so I am guessing that most were aluminum. I have refilled the trans, and started it up, cycling through the gears. All is good so far. I will try it out after church today.

Thanks,

Greg
