I replaced the stock three speed manual in my 67 a-body with an untried four speed, "It oughta just bolt in". Trans came with oldish Hurst shifter. Problem is sometimes I have second gear, upshift or downshift, and sometimes won't go into second. Everything else works ok. Does anyone with experience in this area have a feeling of whether this transmission is junk? It seems strange that it sometimes goes into gear and sometimes not. :?

Check your shifter rods for stripped threads. My friends son was having the same problem with his Cuda and would not hold adjustment. Just a thought..........

I think you're right to think shifter, Romeo Furio. I took the car out today, and found I can always get it into second if I shift into fourth and then over into second. Shifter is old, but threads on adjusters are not the problem, since I had to torch them to get the cams to adjust out to the right position, so that everything is in neutral when a pin is in all the line-up holes.

OK transmission has been pulled. Now should I monkey around with this myself or is this a job best left to a "qualified repair shop" as the repair manual suggests. How much should I expect to pay for a rebuild? Or is a junkyard replacement the way to go? Opinions welcome.
