My power steering pump whines all the time. It still works, though. Can I buy parts to rebuild it at the auto parts store? Is it better to get a rebuilt one? Cost?

Never had a power steering car before.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I think it is better to buy a new pump.

See this thread and try the air bleed procedure described therein. Also check the condition of your fluid. If it's dark, gritty, burnt-smelling or otherwise "off", you're probably in the market for a new pump. It's going to be hard to find anything but a "reman" of questionable quality; about all you can do is steer(!) clear of known-lousy brands like Cardone.

My '71 Saginaw pump suddenly developed a big leak at the front main seal; my local parts had a rebuilt kit for <$20. The rebuild was straight forward; easier than a carb rebuild. A couple of points

1a) the output hose/tube assembly was rusted solid and I had to get a not-quite-exact aftermarket replacement

1b) NAPA tried to palm off the wrong size (3/4") return hose on me when I specifically requested the right size (11/32"); eventually I got some 11/32" from a dealership

2) it takes a special puller to remove the pulley - I used an inexpensive one from Harbor Freight; I also have a KD Tools' one

3) There was a choice of 2 O-rings due to a production change - the details on which to use were on the backside of the instruction sheet in small print
