Hi Guys,

I guess this is the section to post in, doesn't really fit anywhere else.

I've got some rust repair to do on my car, and I think I may need to do a bit on the subframe box section (upper surface). To do this I'll have to drop the subframe.

How easy/difficult is this to do? Can you keep the engine mounted to the subframe? I reckon I can repair the top surface of the subframe if I have around 15" of clearance between it and the body.

How about putting it back together again? I won't be doing this for a while so just trying to get an idea.

Any help/advice etc is greatly appreciated.

All the best,
60 Ply

Nobody done this?

1960 fullsize cars had a bolt in subframe at the front, I don't know if it is the same with the Valiant/Lancer over the next few years. Can anyone comment on the smaller cars?

If you are talking about an engine K-frame, then yes, the smaller cars have them too.

Buddy of mine made a dolly that he dropped the engine, trans, and front suspension out of a Barracuda as an assembly.

Not sure how much you can lower it out without removing the engine.

I used to take the K-frame out of my Dart and leave the motor in, supported on blocks.

You will want to soak those bolts for a week before trying a wrench on them.....

If they wont start to turn and bugger up the nut holders you will be forever sorry.

Not sure if a K member is the same thing - I understand them to be like the front cross member.

I'm talking about this thing : http://postimage.org/image/glx3js2s/

I might be getting lost in translation though.

The K member is a more abbreviated version of your sub frame.

The picture you posted looks rather like a later B body subframe.

It was just a picture I managed to find of a mopar subframe. Mine's probably a little different.

The rust problem I've got is on those fore-aft box sections. It's on the top surface nd I need to cut it out and replace it. I think the original structure was two channel sections lap welded together to form the box. Where it's rusty I'll hack it out ond replace with a single thicker piece to get rid of the lap joint.

Any idea what gauge steel these originally were?

You might check with AutoRust to see if they have anything that might help or inspire.
