Well, I have a leaking axle seal in my '65 Dart, and I've tried a puller, I've pulled the cover and tried prying between the cross shaft and the axle itself, and the axle just won't budge. I pulled the four nuts from the retainer...any ideas???

If you have an old wheel put it on the axle and whack the back lip with a hammer. The bearing is just stuck in the goo in the end of the axle tube.

Warm up the end of the axle tube with a propane torch. That should soften up the goo that 'Zilla mentioned, as well as expand the end slightly.
It would be more effective if you could put a bit of pulling tension on the axle as you do this.

Wow...it must really be gooey! I've never seen anything like this!

I don't have an extra wheel lying around in this bolt pattern, unfortunately! Time to buy more A-Bodies so I have more parts. :) I'll start out tomorrow trying the heat.

Bolt a chain to one or more of the studs and use a Sledge hammer as a slide hammer to give it some persuasion . Works every time !!

When they are stuck like that... it is usually rust "goo" between the bearing & housing socket.
Spray some "Blaster" in there and let it soak-in.

Me... I just beat the crap out of the backing plate, from behind, until the axle pops loose... then replace the backing plate. ( let me know if you need one, I have extras)

Whereabouts are you located? Are you still using the original small-bolt-pattern 13" wheels? So many people have upgraded from those that there may be a forum user near you with some extras laying around.

I used a slide hammer on mine, pulled four axles out of two 7.25 rear ends. The slide hammer seems to work the best.

I'm in Michigan...still using SBP wheels...

After trying everything up to pounding the backing plate, I took it over to my local shop to let them give it a shot. At that point, pulling the u-bolts and unbolting the driveshaft was worth it.

I told them to work on it for an hour, so we'll see what happens. I hate giving up like that, but sometimes you just know when you're going to start breaking stuff needlessly. :)

If THEY can't get it, I'll take you up on your used backing plate, Doc. :)

An update for those interested: The shop got it, but it was a two man job; one guy used heat while the other guy used the slide hammer. They were really, really stuck in there. I got it all back together again now, however, with no leaks.

Thanks for the ideas!
