After rebuilding my distributor and setting point gap to .019, when I try to start it, it doesn't run on its own, and when I turn off the starter, there is major backfire through the exhaust. Please help

What is the engine timing set at? Firing with an open exhaust valve indicates that spark is way late,, maybe the distributor is a tooth off.

Thanks for the info, after reading up on it a little more I found out that it was probably a few teeth off. so after some trial and error I finally got it running
