If I have to stay home I might as well enjoy myself.

Good call. I am currently laid off from work and spending a lot more time out in the shop.

Check the underside of that distributor cap carefully before you use it; those Echlin MO-40s are often ground off-centre. There's a link to a thread about distributor caps along with the tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this post.

Did you check it and see if it's ground on-centre?

Tough to tell from here. Look at all six of the brass lugs, see how they're ground down from a full circle? You're looking to see if they're all pretty much the same half-circle. The off-centre ones have some as a smaller sliver and some as more than half a circle.

Dan, the plastic down around the base of the brass posts have slivers of brass and plastic hanging. I can defiantly see that the brass posts have different circumferences. What is my next option for a cap??? I finally got my VC gasket from NAPA and it ended up being a cork instead of rubber. I'll make it work.

Amazing. I first noticed this problem on the Echlin MO-40 caps around 1992, and sent a couple of them and a detailed letter to Echlin at that time. They said "we don't see a problem with 'em". Nearly two decades later, they still don't give a carp.

Best read this entire thread. Long(!) but worthwhile.

I went to Advance and bought there's. It was cut correctly at least by the naked eye. I will make note of the 2 you listed to buy.

I was planning on using a NOS cap to sidestep this issue. I rebuilt my points distributor last year and used the cap off of a NOS electronic ignition distributor. Lucky me I put the cap on before running the engine as the metal ball in the cap fell out and lodged itself in the advance arms. Don't want to think about what would have happened had it done that on a running engine. As it was I had to disassemble the distributor to get the ball out.

I switched to a newer cap the previous owner left me that still looked on center.

I'll check every cap from here on out to make sure that conductor ball is in securely. Not sure what method is used to secure it there but it appears that time can weaken it.

Brandon
