Are there any problems with running aluminum wheels on the street? I would like to hear from anyone who is doing this.

Even modern rims are still light and good, but....I have a buddy with a tow company and I've seen the mags and aluminum rims on newer cars literally shatter when a blowout occurred or they hit a pot hole on a low tire at speed. Rims like 70 Valiant has are pretty durable, but the aftermarket, 'skinny' ones are a 'watchout' item if you have an 'emergency'....

I run alloys on one of my Valiants and I have run them on other cars I have owned and never had a problem. Some of our roads here in Australia aren't very good, so you just have to be a bit carefull at times.

Aluminum wheels are fine as long as they are made properly. A taller tire helps with the pot hole issue.

My Dart and both my other cars run aluminum wheels. I believe the aluminum street wheels on my 206,000 mile F*rd Probe are the originals, although I can't confirm this. They can hold up pretty well.

I'm rather fond of my aluminum wheels on the old 66.... There are as many safety concerns with aftermarket aluminum wheels as there are with aftermarket steels. Any low profile tire, and a pothole at speed can wreck a rim. I've seen tires blown off of just as many steel wheels as I have aluminums.

i'm pretty sure that 70valiants aluminum slots are sm bolt pattern,but what about BrettK and dart63's ??? Does anyone know if companies are stiill making rims for the small bolt pattern ????

Mine are LBP.... the suspension under the 66 was donated by a 76 Duster.

I assume you're referring to my '65 Coronet? If so, those are Fikse rims. 17x10 in the rear and 17x8 up front. Rear tires are 315/45-17. Better spend some time moving sheetmetal around to make room for them!

I thought they looked like Fikse. Moving metal is not a problem... my quarters are in need of corrosion repair, and I'm probably going to play with the inner tubs a bit for more room while things are apart... funny you should mention spend... Fikse wheels aren't exactly cheap... I'll have to stick with black 15" steel rims with the original dog dish for now, I guess. I wish they were lighter.
