I´m restoring 66 Valiant. Exterior just painted dark turqoise metallic, as it was originally. Interior colors are cold metallic and light tan. Engine color (block) has been red. But I Would like to know more about the colors. How about valve cover or intake manifold. And exhaust manifold and pipe - including muffler?

The list will go on: shock absorbers, torsion bars, rear axle, transmission-box, etc...

Could someone help with the tip for my ORIGINAL "color hunting?"

Sorry we did not get to your earler post, thing have been busy....

The Sl6 engine was a red / orange color through 1967, in 1968 it change to "Mopar Blue"
The intake manifold and valve cover was also the engine color. The factory did not paint the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipes.

The transmission bellhousing was "mostly" painted the engine color, the transmission, suspension parts and rearend were not painted, these items would rust and / or get greasy.

Muffler was also a naturual metal color and the torsion were "dip painted" a semi glossy black.

Hope that helps,
DD

Hey Doc,

My car, a '68 Dodge Dart, actually came with a red/orange engine. The sale date on the owner's manual says January 1968 delivery date. Is it possible that my engine has the '67 style crank? This was always a concern of mine...don't want to buy manual transmission parts that won't swap in.

Does the block have 3 or 5 freeze plugs? What is the casting number on the block? As far the manual trans., all is the same except for the flywheel.

Nothing to be afraid of with a Slant Six, these engines are pretty forgiving. One this is for sure, I have never broke one with a can of spray paint! ; - )

Keep asking questions and don't be afraid to try stuff, that is how you learn.

Doc, I have a '68 V200, red motor, 5 freeze plugs, cast # 2806830-3, scheduled build date of May 9 1968, assembly plant was Hamtrack, MI. Maybe cars assembled at the Los Angeles plant in '68 used blue motors. I have a '68 Signet,(bracket car project), with a red motor but it's at my shop so I can't check the build date and plant.

The block has 3 freeze plugs, but I'm unsure of the casting number (wrote it down but can't find it--hard to see it under my pipes).

My father purchased a 66 Valiant, brand new. I remember the block, valve cover, intake, and oil pan were all red, and the accessories were black.

My '68 Dart 270 was built at Hamtramck with a 5-plug motor - all red. I like the red quite a bit, and you can still get spray cans of it from Mopar Performance.

I checked my '68 Signet, red motor, 5 plug, #2806830-2, Hamtrack, built June 20, 1968. Lou, do you know of another vendor for red besides Mopar Performance? I've used their orange and it's slow to dry in FL humidity. It's still tacky more than a week later. I switched to Plasticote and it's dry in an hour or two. The orange didn't match each other but it was close enough for my low standards.

Can't help you with the paint, although sometimes I've just used Ford Red from local parts store (whatever brand). Mopar engine red is the correct color, as far as I know.

Doc,
Is the color change in 1968 a light blue or a dark blue?
My '69 Dart came with a light blue/green color on the engine. I'm not sure if it is the original color or if someone shot it with a F-O-R-D (four letter word; starts with "F") color. Please advise.
