This runs most of the time between 10 and 20 % from full power. I keep it at 10% minimum for engine compartent air refreshing all the time the engine temperature has raised to normal operating.

This fan was an accessory and probably made in Italy.

lgu32, that setup looks great - you have a lot more clearance between the pulley and radiator than I do, however. What radiator is that?

It is Griffin. I have not had any problems with it. But I have heard they all are not sealed well.

As the radiator is thick there was no option use either mechanical fan or electic fan at the engine side. So I installed that big fan front of the radiator. As it is as wide and tall as the radiator no "tunnel" was needed.

I have Maxxecu engine management controlling the fan speed. There is just a single column with degrees and pwm and it adjust the coolant temperature even better than the thermostat. It could be even better if a vehicle speed will be added as a parameter. I have not tested that yet.

OK, I'm looking at this with the radiator out. Unfortunately I have too much in the way up front for that option.

You can cut out a bit from the front apron / support area for more rad or cooler clearance.

Rhat's what I did on my '64.
I will illustrate this a bit for you when I have some time.

I quess Matt have an intercooler there. This fan fit to -66 without any cuttings. The tube frame around the fan is for the radiator mounting only.

Matt I was looking for a picture of your front set up. Intercooler, fan ...etc Is it posted on here somewhere?

Another idle test had the temperature creep up a little further before I shut it down. Also, this happened on shutdown.

Did a bit of playing with the timing, but I'm wondering if I need to find a way to drop the idle speed (around 850-950 RPM in Drive, 6 degrees of timing produces the lower figure while 12 degrees goes toward the higher end) or add more airflow. And probably more overflow tank capacity; this small overflow tank looks a bit undersized.

Transmission cooler mounting:

Not the best picture of the intercooler, but you can see where it is without the grille:

Measured what I have clearance for and what parts I have on hand. Here are the options I can see.

1. Replace the small electric fan with a beast of an OE 7 blade engine driven fan. Unfortunately, there's no clearance for a clutch, and if I guessed wrong on the engine movement under braking, it could take out the radiator.

2. Move the transmission cooler up, install two small pusher fans on the lower half of the radiator while the puller fan pulls the upper half.

3. Switch to a direct fit radiator with transmission cooler, and put a 17" electric fan (or the previously mentioned OE fan) behind it. Downsides: A cheap eBay special aluminum radiator is $165, and good radiators are significantly more.

Which do you think is likely to give the best cooling?

Matt, I know some people will disagree with this, but I installed an aluminum dual pass transmission cooler (Round tube about 2" diameter with fins) under my truck behind the transmission, along the frame. I have towed my race car and trailer to a couple races with this set up and I tested the cooler temp as soon as I arrived at the track and it was @ 160 or 170 degrees, if memory serves me correctly. This may free up some real estate up front for you and not require a new radiator. I can't imagine if my truck ran that cool towing 5000# that your little A body would get too hot. Indeed it may not be hot enough?? Just another thought.

Moving the transmission cooler up gives me enough room to clear the fans.

But the fans push the intercooler too far forward.

Image

So, unless I want to run without a grille, do I get a set of smaller fans or a stock replacement radiator?
