you're right, that's the one. And wow--sucks on that whole ceramic paint issue. I think I will avoid that one like the plaque.

how bout it...price on MP paint? Dare I ask tooowice?

I haven't had problems with Dupli-color. Yeah it's glossy out of the can, but I was just noticeing today that it dulled down to a nice satin finish.

I've been known to fudge times and temps a bit. No problems yet... And it's only HALF as much as the MP stuff. (anyone else noticed that to be normal for dealership stuff - twice as much?)-zorg

So is Plastikote. I didn't say Duplicolor totally sucked, just not my personal preference. I have used it in a pinch. I have tried to recoat it without the first series of coats being cured enough, and believe me, it is a mess! (like clean it up and start over). Also, their is virtually no difference between their "semi" and "hi-gloss black" (both extremely glossy), and their "low-gloss black" is really flat-black. There is no in between. Of course, just about all spray-bomb engine paint is way glossier than the original factory paint and that includes Plastikote, but it doesn't look quite as cheesy as Duplicolor (in my opinion). The MP stuff actually laid down real nice and has a nice sheen to it, so I was happy even though it was big $$$.

well sheesh, i know its 2x as much, but how many cans did you end up using? Total paint cost <$30? reliability is a good thing =) Being unhappy with the result a few years later = bad

Y'know what? I just remembered. The paint I had such terrific success with on my (now departed) '65's engine was NAPA Farm Equipment Enamel, which I believe at the time was made by Martin-Senour paints. Color was "International Harvester Red" (IH-RED) and it was an exact match for the original red engine color. It was very easy to work with, had very good coverage and resisted engine heat just fine.

And another thing: You're going to have to mod your radiator's top tank. The 170 had the inlet hose fitting pretty well near the center and uses a Gates 777 hose (simple "L" bend, as shown in the photos of the '62 Savoy you posted). The '61-'62 A-bodies with 225 are a really tight fit between top of engine and top of radiator, and there's not enough room for the L-bend hose while still allowing enough flexibility to ensure the rad isn't pulled apart as the engine moves around. They use a Gates 20450 and the inlet fitting is more towards the passenger side.

I've never really had a durability issue with any major brand engine paints. Some seem to be more susceptible to hot anti-freeze than others though. That will discolor them if it leaks or sprays on the finish and make it look like crap. After a few months of solid curing, it's usually more resistant.

This could throw a wrench into the works: I went through the '62 FPC and here's what I found under Oil Pickup Tube and Screen Assembly:

A-Body 170: 2121702
A-Body 225: 2206317
B-Body 225: 2206261

And under Oil Pan:

A-body 170: 2268446
A-body 225: 2268449
B-body 225: 2206463

So, it looks as if there are THREE different oil pans and THREE different pickup tube assemblies, depending not only on engine size but on vehicle chassis.

NAPA Farm & Equipment Caterpillar yellow is what I used to paint my slant:

It does have quite a gloss to it. If I keep the road dust & grime cleaned off, it still looks 'wet'. Engine has about 1000 miles on it now. It doesn't seem to be any worse for the wear yet, but it is still relatively new. :?

That yellow surely looks nice on the engine. I like it better than the pale MP yellow.

What'd you do with the engine's tinware (timing cover, rocker cover, etc.)? Cadmium plate, or??? I see it's not painted.

On the valve cover, a year and a half or so, on my super six intake, two weeks. I just noticed it is starting to lose the gloss, and take on a nice almost matt finish. About the price difference: poor kids use cheap stuff... -zorg
