I'm converting my '64 Valiant 225 to an electronic ignition that consists of a Mopar Performance kit with the distributor reworked to use stock springs.

The question I have is about a new coil I've had on the shelf for a few years. It's a Borg Warner part and it's actually made in the USA. The box is marked "E31" and the coil itself has 27290 stamped on it and a note to use with an external resistor only.

I checked the Borg Warner website and they list the E31 along with several other part numbers and the way I read it, they all fit dozens of car models, including lots of Mopar models from '55 to '86. The 27290 number does not come up when I use their part number search function.

A post on another website asks about this same part number for an old Corvette and a response says it's only for use with a points-style distributor.

Can anyone tie the 27290 part number to a Mopar electronic ignition usage?

E31 is a more or less universal 12v can-type ignition coil for use with ballast resistor. No real advantage using this coil instead of the one presently on the car.

I'm only trying to avoid potential breakdowns....the original Mopar coil is still on the car after 41 years...at least it's a Mopar coil and I know it hasn't been changed in at least 21 years.

I guess I'll just throw the new one in the trunk and see how long the old one will last.

The old one won't last long. Mine lasted a week after converting to electronic ignition. You need a coil for electronic ignition.
